Abstract:
Surveys attempts to combat antisemitism between 1889-92 in Austria and Germany, from individual feats (such as duelling and public discussion in antisemitic meetings) to organized actions: the foundation of anti-antisemitic periodicals and organizations. Discusses various newspapers, belonging to both Jews and liberal non-Jews, and their viewpoints - e.g. the "Israelitisches Gemeindeblatt" founded by Carl Brisch in Mülheim, 1888; the "Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums"; the "Antisemiten-Spiegel" founded by A.W. Kafemann in Danzig, 1890; "Wahrheit und Gerechtigkeit" founded in Berlin, 1891, and its successor "Die Schmach des Jahrhunderts" founded by Karl Schneidt in 1892. The first organization was a local Verein zur Abwehr des Antisemitismus founded in 1889 in Linz by Karl Ritter von Kissling (notes also his paper "Zeitschrift zur Bekaempfung des Antisemitismus"). In evaluating these first attempts at combating antisemitism, states that their social and ideological base was very small; the prognosis for a successful outcome of the struggle against antisemitism was bleak.
