Abstract:
A paper presented to the International Congress of Polish Scholars, Yale University, June 1992. The Catholic Church in Nazi-occupied Europe, in particular in Poland, failed to preserve its independence from the state machine, as well as its potential for constructive dissent and disobedience. In its preoccupation with the preservation of the Church at any cost, it turned a blind eye to the mass annihilation of the civil population, including Jews, and thus did damage to itself from the moral viewpoint. It failed to protect Jews as a religious minority. Contends that the contemporary Church in Poland must draw lessons from this.
