Abstract: Discusses Brazil's restrictive immigration policy against the Jews between 1934-42, as well as Jewish reactions to this policy. States that many documents are still kept secret by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, but the anti-Jewish policy of the minister Oswaldo Aranha and of his colleagues is well-known. The Jews were accused of falsely pretending to be farmers, of being non-assimilable, of corruption, and of communist activities, and were prevented from entering Brazil. However, many Jews fleeing from Europe succeeded in immigrating despite the difficulties, as false tourists or false Catholics, or simply by bribing government officials.
