Abstract:
Presents two less-known texts by Freud on antisemitism, both published in November 1938. The first is a letter to the editor of the British journal "Time and Tide". Freud explains why he declined to contribute to the journal's special issue on antisemitism. He emphasizes the persecution he suffered in Vienna and suggests that non-Jews must protest against antisemitism, not he who was hurt by it. The other is an article, published here in its entirety, from the émigré paper "Die Zukunft". Freud quotes an essay by an unknown (non-Jewish) author who criticizes Christians and humanists for protesting against antisemitism for the sake of charity toward undeserving Jews. The Jews have contributed greatly to Western society and deserve justice, not favors, argues the unknown essayist, whose name Freud claims to have forgotten. Kijak maintains, as does Freud's biographer Ernest Jones, that the unknown essayist was Freud himself.
