Abstract:
Translation of a Spanish manuscript written in 1997 at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem:
Abstract:
This is a survey of the history of German Jews in Chile since the 1850s. Jewish families settled in Chile since 1915. With the rise of the Nazis in Germany, Jews in Chile organized an association for Jewish immigrants, ‘Comite de Ayuda’, while the German embassy in Santiago reported back to Berlin about the ‘Jewish problem’ in Chile. A report by Dr. Georg Leisewitz emphasized the problem of a ‘Jewish hold’ on natural resources in Chile, citing for example the industrial concern ‘Mauricio Hochschild & Cia. Ltda.’. Leisewitz also elaborated on racial issues of Chile’s ‘Jewish problem’ throughout its history.
