Abstract: Meidias (in Greek Mειδίας; lived 4th century BC), an Athenian of considerable wealth and influence, was a violent and bitter enemy of Demosthenes, the orator. His hostility he first displayed in 361 BC when he broke violently into the house of Demosthenes, with his brother Thrasylochus, to take possession of it,-Thrasylochus having offered, in the case of a trierarchy, to make an exchange of property with Demosthenes, under a private understanding with the guardians of the latter that, if the exchange were effected, the suit then pending against them should be dropped. This led Demosthenes to bring against him an accusation of kakegoria (ie verbal insult), and when Meidias after his condemnation did not fulfil his obligations, Demosthenes brought against him a dike exules (ie a trial for obtaining something already lawfully assigned to the plaintif). Meidias found means to prevent any decision being given far a period of eight years, and at length, in 354 BC, he had an opportunity to take revenge upon Demosthenes, who had in that year voluntarily undertaken the choregia. Meidias not only endeavoured in all possible ways to prevent Demosthenes from discharging his office in its proper form; also, their mutual relations were sored more still when Demosthenes attempted to oppose the proposal for sending aid against Callias and Taurosthenes of Chalcis to Plutarch, the tyrant of Eretria, and the friend of Meidias. The breaking point arrived when Meidias attacked Demosthenes with open violence during the celebration of the great Dionysia. Such an act gave Demosthenes a good opportunity for moving a public incrimination against his enemy (353 BC), and on this occasion wrote Against Meidias, still extant, which was never pronounced as the two adversaries found an amicable arrangement under which Demosthenes retired his accusation for thirty minae

Abstract: The collection of articles in 'The Hebrew Language in the Era of Globalization' is designed for researchers and teachers of Hebrew in Educational frameworks, and allows for a comprehensive study of varied aspects of the Hebrew language. The volume brings to center stage research issues regarding Hebrew in its cultural, social, and linguistic contexts; discusses the state of Hebrew in Israel and in the world; and looks into current curricula for the teaching of Hebrew as a Second Language. The volume is unique in that it combines theory and practice; deals with Hebrew as a first, second, and heritage language; and relates to learners of different ages and from a number of different populations - native speakers of Hebrew, the Arab sector in Israel, and Jewish communities in the Diaspora. The volume is comprised of three sections. The first section covers the following topics: The state of Hebrew in the context of Israel-Diaspora relations; Hebrew in European and American universities; the dilemma of the language of prayer; challenges confronting the modern reader of a classical text; linguistic and socio-linguistic trends in modern Hebrew; achievements of new immigrant students in academic Hebrew; the theoretical basis for the development of curricula for the teaching of Hebrew as a first and second language; and a model for a language policy in a multilingual and multi-cultural society such as Israel. The second section presents the new curriculum for learners of Hebrew in the Arab sector as well as curricula for the teaching of Hebrew in the Diaspora for kindergarten children, elementary school students and junior-high and high school students. The third section expresses concern about the future of Hebrew both in Israel and in the Diaspora in the era of globalization

Abstract: In Ha-halakhah ha-nevu'it , the author traces the halakhic philosophy of Rabbi Abraham Isaac ha-Kohen Kook, one of the preeminent Jewish thinkers of modern times. Rabbi Kook was called upon to offer his opinions on the raging issues of the day within the Jewish world—enlightenment, secularization, and the Zionist movement—and his influence on Israeli public life was and remains enormous. His complex, poetically formulated pronouncements resonated with the community and gave rise to varied, sometimes contradictory interpretations. Although regarded as philosophically daring and a source of intellectual ferment, he is also recalled as a stringent halakhist. Not surprisingly, most of the literature on Rabbi Kook thus far has concentrated on his thought and has tended to disregard his halakhic rulings. This book is the first to examine the full extent of Rabbi Kook's philosophical and halakhic writings, taking account of all the contradictions and tensions they embody. At the same time, it illustrates the linkage among halakhah, aggadah, and prophecy. The study shows that there can be no halakhah without aggadah; that every ruling is illuminated by an underlying philosophy. To elucidate Rabbi Kook's halakhic writings, the book introduces the reader to the areas of his thinking and philosophy that encompass human thought in general as well as the hidden recesses of Jewish literature in all its forms: aggadah and halakhah; poetry and legal decisions; esoteric and exoteric teachings. Against that comprehensive background, the meta-halakhic principles that underlie his halakhic rulings clearly emerge. Rabbi Kook's jurisprudence touches on the realm of prophecy, and his journals—extensively cited in this book—convey his prophetic sensibility. The sense of prophecy is tied to the experience of the return to the Land of Israel, and it plays a central role in understanding his halakhic writings. The book examines the problematic interplay between prophecy and halakhah in general and Rabbi Kook's prophetic-halakhic world in particular, along with its wealth of implications

Abstract: For many years Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) has been the object of intense debate. After her bitter critiques of Zionism, which seemed to nullify her early involvement with that movement, and her extremely controversial "Eichmann in Jerusalem" (1963), Arendt became virtually a taboo figure in Israeli and Jewish circles. Challenging the "curse" of her own title, "Hannah Arendt in Jerusalem" carries the scholorly investigation of this musch-discussed writer to the very place where her ideas have been most conspicuosly ignored. Sometimes sympathetically, sometimes critically, these distinguished contributors reexamine the crucial aspects of Arendt's lfe and thought: her complex identity as a German Jew; her commitment to and critique of Zionism and the State of Israel; her works on totalitarianism, Nazism and the Eichmann trial; her relationship to key twentieth-century intellectuals, from Gershom Scholem to Martin Heidegger; her intimate and tense connections to German culture; and her reworkings of political thought and philosophy in the light of the experience of the twentieth century

Abstract: By closely examining the interaction between intellectual and material culture in the period before the Nazis assumed power in Germany, the author comes to the conclusion that, contrary to widely held assumptions, consumer culture in the Weimar period, far from undermining reading, used reading culture to enhance its goods and values. Reading material was marked as a consumer good, while reading as an activity, raising expectations as it did, influenced consumer culture. Consequently, consumption contributed to the diffusion of reading culture, while at the same time a popular reading culture strengthened consumption and its values. Thus the book presents the argument that the Weimar period, characterized as it was by economic hardship and political instability, witnessed a constant widening of the gap between the world of print as a “virtual” area in which the world of symbols and images of the new consumer culture developed, and the daily realities of most social strata. In the German context of the 1920s, this was a fateful and ominous trend

The topics discussed are from a philosophical-historical perspective that relates directly to the present. Abstract: This book contains the biographies of the Antonine Caesars (Aelius-Didius Iulianus) from the Manuscript P(alatinus) 899 in the Vatican Library. The manuscript was already known to men of letters in the late Middle Ages That its contents are essential to a better understanding of Imperial Rome is conventionally accepted by historians. It was published as early as the first generation of printers (Milano 1475). The biographies present a wide array of deeds and indecisions in the history of Rome during the IInd century AD. These were actually the days near the.end of the Pax Romana. The biographies present not only the characters of the Caesars, for they equally reveal the many patterns of Enlightment hovering over Rome during the years of the Antonine patronage. The tendency to base the life of citizens as well as those of the provincials not on the arbitrariness of imperial bureaucrats but law (Roman Law) inspired by philosophy (Hellenic and Hellenistic) is a remarkable signpost of this period Women were in those days considered more as juridical persons and less under the tutelage of men. Indeed the Antonines did not abolish slavery, but the attitude towards them more human. The tolerance these Caesars based on moral principles.aleviated the task of preaching in the name of Christ and winning followers. . Jews were freed by the Caesars from the danger and oppression of the edicts imposed by Hadrian. Their moderation enabled the Jews in Judaea (recently renamed Palaestina by Hadrian) to come close to a rcovery. The author of these biograpies had intentionally disguised his name and identity. Nevertheless (relying on internal evidence of his work) it seems most likely that he had compiled the SHA at the turn of the fifth century. Born as a scion of the old Roman aristocracy, the new religion aggresively imposed on Rome did not attract him. He rather felt close to the Rome of the days bygone, of the liberal temper, its literature and thought and freedom of belief. Aiming to avoid a confrontation on unequal terms with the contemporary authorities in Rome, he prefered to present his work under cover of six differerent pseudonyms. All this makes even the literary aspect of his work of greater interest and admiration Introduced, translated and annotated by David Golan

Abstract: ITALIA Periodical for research in the history, culture, and literature of the Jews of Italy. Whoever is dealing with Jewish thought and humanities knows well how important and influential the Italian Jews were and are in these wide ranges of fields. The large creation and thought of the Italian Jews was passed on for multi generations in Hebrew and Italian while keeping a firm methodical tradition which ITALIA periodical is following and keeping the importance of studying and researching the language, literature, culture, and history of Italy and Italian Jews. Italian Jews had a strong presence in the European culture from the 13th century on to our current time. Documents, manuscripts, and many books show us many remarkable authors and thinkers, Italian Jews and others, that had strong ties with the rather small ethnicity of Italian Jews. Even though there are many respected studies on the contributions of Italian Jews to the cultural making of the Italian nation, there is still a necessary need for a centralized publication of these past and new studies. ITALIA is an important focal point for an academic discussion on the culture, literature, history, and language of Italian Jews as well as a place where we can weight the conclusions of these studies and place goals for future doing in these exciting full of aspects fields

Abstract: The poetry of Y.Ogen has been cast aside from modern Hebrew Poetry inner circle of the 1930's due to its affiliation to the some what forgotten poetic group of the poet Yitzhak Lamdan who was the literary editor of 'Gilionot' literary monthly. The mystic and melodic literary course permeated at the beginning of the 1930s' to the Hebrew Poetry by that circle's special style, first and foremost due to Ogen's writing, has by many aspects, foreseen the late 1930's modernism, such as Alterman's Poetry. Ogen's book 'Ba-hizdakchut' (Gilionot, 1935) has generated a tacit Altermanic revolution, that has not been fully acknowledged, because of the expulsion of Gilionot Circle from the critical discourse of the poetic modernity of the time. The monography of Y.Ogen describes in details this poetic course of action in a manner separated from the 'Literary Republic' conventional discourse, that has ultimately linked between modernistic strategies and violent culture quarrels and poetic strategies of annihilation of old traditions in favor of a new style. The critical discourse hereby discussed - literary ecology - deals with the poetic habitat and writer's cultural environment and rehabilitates outcasted poets by reinsuring their formative influence upon the esthetical climate, especially by pointing out the writer's poetical skills as a form of an artistic niche in an environment which characteristics are both cultural and materialistic

Abstract: Literature for children written in pre-state Israel played a major role in shaping the young generation's values, experiences and conception of the world. Up until the 1940s, the hegemonic current of this literature's related the tale of the Zionist-Socialist accomplishments and presented the Hebrew generation growing up in the country as the opposite of the Diasporic Jew. During World War II, with the arrival of the news of the Holocaust transpiring in Europe, as well as at the period of conflict with the British, the story for children had changed dramatically. This shift has left a considerable mark on Hebrew culture as a whole. In her book From the School Desk We Were Taken Yael Darr describes how writers for the young committed themselves toa new story, focusing on the battle and sacrifice of youths. In this new narrative the Hebrew children were portrayed as skillful fighters serving role models even for the parents' generation. Yet, Darr also suggests that the literature for children did not ignore the news about the destruction of the European Jewry. While it might be expected of literature aimed at young readers to spare them exposure to such a catastrophe, it was in fact precisely that literature which was quick to tell the story of the disaster. Furthermore, in its varied and numerous references to the Holocaust the children's literature even preceded the Holocaust literature for adults. Darr's book recounts the military-national story as well as the tale of the devastation of the European Jewry in all its complexity. The writer also shows how some of the literary forms dealing with the Holocaust during the British Mandate were abandoned, when towards the founding of the state the children's literature fused the heroism of the country's youth and the story of the Holocaust weaving them into a pronounced national lesson. The book uncovers a wide range of literary works for children and youngsters written in the nineteen forties both by mainstream, center-stage, authors and by those in its margins. It closely analyzes several establishing works of fiction thus shedding light on the society and culture of those years while undermining conventions concerning the position of the Israeli based Jewish community concerning the Holocaust and its survivors

Abstract: This book examines the construction of gendered identities within the Israeli army and their relationship with the conceptions of citizenship. Based primarily on interviews, the book explores the different construction of gendered identities amongst four distinct groups: combat soldiers, soldiers in blue-collar roles, soldiers in white-collar roles and women soldiers in “masculine" roles. The author argues that during their military service, soldiers in varied military roles construct different conceptions of masculinity and citizenship, both of which are constituted through an ongoing dialogue with the hegemonic masculinity of the combat soldier, which is also identified as the “good citizen”. Therefore, these multiple gendered and civic identities reflect and reproduce social stratification along the lines of gender, ethnicity and class

Abstract: This study is an annotated edition and commentary of an Arabic-Old French phrase book found on the last thirteen pages of a Coptic lexicographic treatise compiled in the thirteenth century and recopied in the sixteenth century (MS. BnF Copte 53). The main value of this work is twofold: first, it is a specimen of the Crusader Old French, of which little has been preserved; and second, it provides evidence for the vernacular language of the period. In the analysis of the material, an attempt has been made to reconstruct from a diachronic-diatopic perspective the vernacular French spoken at Acre in the mid-thirteenth century. This volume will be of interest for Romance linguists and philologists, as well as historians of the Crusades and the Latin East. Arabists and historians of the late medieval Muslim Middle East of this time will also find much of use in this work

Abstract: What are the basic values that bind Israel's diverse citizenry? What characterizes Israeli citizenship, a State that incorporates a society with a Jewish majority and an Arab minority? What are the sources of inspiration guiding the civics curriculum taught in Israel's schools? How can higher education enrich Israel's civic tongue? Civic Tongue in Israel is collection of research reports, theoretical essays and observations about Jewish and Arab attempts to dialogue with one another around these issues. The first group of essays examine the dissonance between the roots of the Hebrew culture in Biblical Hebrew and ethics and its use in the context of Zionist and democratic ethics (Dan Avnon, Eyal Chowers and Revital Amiran-Sapir, Moshe Behar). The second group of essays addresses the tension between native-Arabis speakers and native-Hebrew speakers (Michal Zak, Issam Abu-Rayah, Ruth Gavison). The third group present critical analysis of ways to incorporate and to implement recurring attempts (and failures) to rectify the paucity of democratic civic education in Israel (Hallili Pinson, Gayil Talshir). Daphna Saring and Avner de-Shalit offer innovative perspectives on the public arena and on the responsibility of higher education (and educators) to empower the critical capacities of Israel's citizens. All who feel a need to deepen civic consciousness in Israel - of the individual, of groups and of civic society associations, of students and of teachers - will find in this book a fresh civic language: educated, reasoned, equal, diverse and sensitive to the needs of Israel's citizen

Abstract: This unique volume, which is sure to engage the attention of both scholars and the general public, is an unparalleled cross-generational and international dialogue among eminent historians about three central aspects of the unfathomable enigma of the Holocaust. In the first section, beyond a seminal overview of sixty years of research, the writers reflect on historiography and historical thought ranging from contemporaries of the Third Reich to the ongoing discussion about the controversial role post-war West German historians played in Holocaust research. This is followed by a section focusing on social antisemitism until the 1950s and the German public's awareness of the Holocaust, including the posture of the German Resistance Movement. The third major theme is the Jewish society, from its initial attempts to develop new forms of societal life under the Nazi regime until the brink of annihilation during the mass deportation from the Warsaw Ghetto to Treblinka. The concluding chapter sheds light on the unresolved tension between reflective personal memory and impersonal historical research of this dark period in human history

Abstract: Can the production of foreign plays become relevant to a local audience? What is the extent of the playwright's influence on the stage directors? How does the social and cultural climate in Israel influence local productions of foreign plays? In "Between Playwright and Director: A Dialogue" the Israeli reader will find answers to all these questions and many more.Through the analysis of the Greek tragedies and the plays of Shakespeare, Ibsen, Lorca, Brecht, Beckett and Ionesco and their numerous stage realizations in Israeli public theatres since 1973 up to the present, Bilha Blum depicts the fascinating cultural encounter between the foreign and the local, so typical of the Israeli national identity. By tracing the imaginary dialogue between playwrights and directors, the book succeeds in vivifying the unique artistic language that our most accomplished directors used in staging the plays. It delves into their sources of inspiration and creative processes thus supplying its readers with the key to the mystery surrounding the classics' immortality and their interpretations."Between Playwright and Director: A Dialogue" deals with social and cultural issues concerning both classic plays and Israeli performances that have never been raised before. Bilha Blum's work makes an important contribution to the study of the modern Israeli theatre

Abstract: L.S. Vygotsky (1896-1934) a man of many talents, who is famous mainly as a psychologist. His works written between 1924-1934 do not belong to history. The influence of his ideas on modern psychology and education is only growing. The importance of his cultural-historical approach is widely accepted today particularly because the most influential twentieth century approaches to Psychology failed to recognize the vital role of cultural and social environment and the mediating function of adults in the learning process and cognitive development of the child. The book "Language and Thought" was published in Russian in 1934 shortly after Vygotsky's death and the first translation into English came only in 1962. Today it has been translated into more than twenty languages. In the present Hebrew complete translation from the original Russian a special effort has been made not only to precise in transmission of the content, but also to preserve the style and the distinctive thought process of the author. In this book Vygotsky gives a thorough critical analysis of the theory of Jan Piaget. The Hebrew edition includes the response of Jan Piaget, written about thirty years later. The book includes also Vygotsky's article on childhood bilingualism as this subject matter is of particular relevance and importance in the context of Israel. The book contains a preface "The Riddle of Vygotsky" by the scientific editor of the Hebrew translation Dr. Bella Kotik-Friedgut. The author explains the importance of Vygotsky's ideas for modern education. The introduction provides acquaintance with the many and varied accomplishments of Vygotsky's brief life as a man, a scientist and as a Jew

Abstract: What was the balance of power in the battles of Judas Maccabaeus and in Israel's War of Independence? Were they, as is commonly assumed, wars of the few against the many? These questions were discussed in a conference organized by the School of History of the Hebrew University in December 1999. The participants were in general agreement that the discussion of the balance of power must not be confined to the number of troops and that other variables must be taken into account. Nevertheless the numbers of troops is important. Conflicting views were presented on the battles of Judas Maccabaues whereas on the number of troops in Israel's War of Independence there was general agreement. Published in this collection, for the first time, are a General Staff document from 1952 and a research paper by Yehosuha Ben Arie for the IDF History Branch from 1955. Both conclude that in the matter of the number of troops the War of Independence on the whole was not an instance of the few against the many. Other articles, based on lectures delivered at the conference include Bezalel Bar Kochva and Israel Shatzman on the battles of Judas Maccabaeus; Beni Morris and Amitzur Ilan on the balance of forces in the War of Independence, Eyal Nave and Mordechai Bar-On on the evolution of Israeli collective memory of the balance of power and on possible ways of representing the facts of the case in school books; Shmaryahu Ben-Pazi, Moshe Erenwald and Nimrod Hagiladi on three case studies: Safad, The Jewish Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem, and Rechovot; and Joseph Heller's essay on the centrality of the 'few against many' theme in David Ben Gurion's thought which widens the scope of the discussion in the conference

Abstract: The atmosphere of hostility between Jews and Arabs which accompanied the establishment of the State of Israel cast a shadow over the cultural contacts between the two sides. As a result of the emotions engendered by the conflict, and the differences between the cultural discourse of the two sides, many found it difficult to take an objective view of the other side. The fact that Bialik, Agnon, and A.B. Yehoshua have been published in Arabic is evidence of a desire for dialogue. This book, however, describes how ideological considerations have dominated translation activity. Translation in the Shadow of Confrontation examines the translation activity of modern Hebrew literature into Arabic. It focuses on the development, the status and the character of these translations in the first forty years of the existence of the State of Israel, and on the dominant norms which influenced translation before, during and after its execution. To this end dozens of translations of contemporary Hebrew fiction and poetry into Arabic which have appeared in various publications in Israel and the Arab world are analyzed. Three areas of translation are discusssed, each of them unique from several points of view: the individuals and bodies involved in translation activity, the considerations which motivated them, and their translation policy. In the translation activity which took place in Israel in the 1950s and 1960s the involvement of elements in the establishment is pronounced. They aimed at translating into Arabic texts with a social and ideological character, and, therefore, chose works which reflected the Zionist consensus. They deleted parts of the text and added to it, and translated into Arabic with a high stylistic register. After 1967 translation activity in Israel was in the hands of independent organizations supported by the establishment. Most of the translators were faithful to the Hebrew text, used Hebrew in their translations, and related to Hebrew culture as a hegemonic culture. The defeat of 1967 led to an increase of interest in Israeli society, culture and literature in the Arab world. Most of the translators tried to use their work to expose the racist and propagandist character of Hebrew literature, as they saw it, and chose for translation texts whose content emphasized its alien character

Abstract: Is it possible that Jews will expel their wives, the mothers of their children? The Jews returning from the Babylonian Diaspora were asked, according to the Book of Ezrah and Nehemia, to differentiate themselves from other people by expelling their foreign wives, thus purifying the community. This was a particularly harsh demand, quite unique in the biblical context. Yonina Dor examines this story through critical analysis of the biblical text, a historical discussion of these women's identity, and an anthropological examination of the events

Abstract: More than fifty years ago the discovery of scrolls in eleven caves beside the Dead Sea ignited the imagination of the world. Expectations abounded that the scrolls would reveal actual contemporaneous accounts of the birth of Christianity, perhaps even of the life of Jesus. The research that followed—its inner logic, and what its impassioned highly controversial theories reveal about the framing of facts and the interpreting of texts—is what interests philosopher Edna Ullmann-Margalit in this thoroughly absorbing book.Since the inception of Dead Sea Scrolls research, a central theory has emerged. Known as the Qumran-Essene Hypothesis, it asserts that the scrolls belonged to the Essenes, a sect whose center was at the nearby site of Qumran. In Out of the Cave, Ullmann-Margalit focuses on this theory and the vicissitudes of its career. Looking at the Essene connection, the archaeology of Qumran, and the sectarian nature of the scrolls community, she explores the different arenas in which contesting theories of the scrolls do battle. In this context she finds fascinating examples of issues that exercise philosophers of science as well as the general public issues that only amplify the already intrinsic interest of the Dead Sea scrolls

Abstract: Metropolitan reforms have been implemented in Canada at a scale and frequency greater than anywhere else in the democratic world. Recent Canadian metropolitan reforms are setting precedents and their fate could influence metropolitan agendas worldwide. This edited collection deals with local government reforms in major Canadian metropolitan areas and provides comparative insights from other countries. Steps undertaken by Canadian provinces have seemingly preferred in some cases 'old regionalism' territorial reforms over 'new regionalism' horizontal networks of governance. Canadian experiences indicate that both weak metropolitan mechanisms and neighborhood-level governments tend to be unstable, often not fulfilling expectations. Moreover, it seems that only old regionalism deals effectively with sharing fiscal burdens, whereas new regionalism approaches can be effective in development. The cross-national case studies provide a perspective on the role of different political systems and political cultures in determining the metropolitan governance agenda and the reforms undertaken, revealing considerable similarities in the agenda and diversity in responses

Abstract: Learning by inquiry is the search for answers through questions, as the pupil is active in acquiring knowledge himself, and he is active in his own understanding and in the construction of his knowledge. Teaching and learning through inquiry and the difficulties involved with implementing this inquiry are discussed in this work. The writers, who are pioneering Israeli researchers also in the international frame, illustrate theoretical and practical aspects of learning and teaching by inquiry; they present educational experiments and bring the latest research

Abstract: "A catastrophe has befallen us!" - these were the words expressed by the secretary of the Arab League following the decision by the Arabs to invade Palestine on 15 May 1948. Who caused the Arab countries to participate in a war in which they had no interest, and why did they fight? What did King Abdallah say to Golda Meir during their secret conversation in Amman on the eve of the war? Why did the Arab efforts to release the Egyptian soldiers from the siege at Faluja fail? How did the Jewish prisoners live in the prisoners' camp in Trasnjordan and how they were finally released? Both these and other questions are answered in the book: Cooperation and Hostility: Abdallah, the Arab Legion and the 1948 War, which examines the rule of the Arab Legion during 1948 war. The book explains King Abdallah's intentions towards Palestine as well as considering his political and military moves. The book also analyses the cooperation between the Arab armies during the war, and the British aid to Transjordan and especially to the Arab Legion during this war. With the aid of British, Israeli and Jordanian documents the author presents in a clear and comprehensive manner the establishment and development of the units of the Arab Legion including the military intelligence and the Air force which were exposed for the first time in this book

Abstract: This book presents a descriptive and historical poetics of the re-written bible, or the exegetical narrative in rabbinic literature of Late Antiquity. The exegetical narrative is composed of a story which simultaneously represents and interprets its biblical counterpart. As a hermeneutical reading of the biblical story presented in narrative form, its defining characteristic lies precisely in this synergy of narrative and exegesis. This genre is but one historical manifestation of the general cultural phenomenon of re-writing canonical texts which begins already in the Bible itself and could be said to reach the modern era in works by Thomas Mann, Joseph Heller, and even “Moses the Prince of Egypt.” Paradoxically, it is precisely the canonical status of the text - that which acts as the foundation for its cultural legitimacy - that invites its constant transformation, violation, and appropriation by succeeding generations of readers. Within this general perspective, this book concentrates on one specific historical moment - rabbinic culture in Late Antiquity. Why, in what circumstances, and through which means does rabbinic culture transfigure itself by re-imagining its past? How does this genre exert its hegemony over the sacred text, its power and meanings? What are the cultural paradigms of coherence that both enable and restrain its reception? These are some of the questions the book addresses in an attempt to provide a new perspective on the cultural imagination of the rabbinic period

Abstract: A leading critic of Polish literature, Artur Sandauer (1913-1989) takes a hard, at times painful, look at the critical role that Jews and individuals of "Jewish descent" played as both creators and objects of literature and culture in twentieth-century Poland. Through an engaging series of essays, Sandauer analyzes major figures in Polish literature via the prism of one central, if at times muted, issue: "the Jews." Sandauer begins his analysis by looking at such classics of Polish literature as Mickiewicz, continues by discussing the experiences of writers in the interwar era such as Tuwim and Schulz, challenges reigning myths of the war years with critical examinations of works by Andrzejewski and Miłosz, exposes the problematic relationship between writers and the Communist regime through the career of Ważyk, and concludes with hope for Poland's future with discussions of Szymborska and, in a bold display of intellectual honesty, himself. Written during the period of martial law, Sandauer's work stands as a testimony to the power of the written word as well as the renaissance in Jewish studies taking place in contemporary Poland

Abstract: Bergen-Belsen, a symbol of Nazi satanic evil, was the biggest concentration camp in Germany and the only one to be transformed after the war to become a Displaced Persons' camp and an assembly and rehabilitatation center for many thousands survivors from Eastern Europe, who wished to leave Europe heading for America or Eretz Israel. During its five years' existence as DP camp, Bergen-Belsen became a focal point for the national organization of all the Jews in the British Occupation Zone in North-West Germany, including those who founded the new German-Jewish communities. How did the survivors manage to rehabilitate after the hell they had gone through and against the background of difficult camp conditions after liberation? what was it that motivated them and what shape did their forced yet temporary communal life take? How did they transform from dying people into a dynamic and active entity, with national aspirations? Who were those who founded the new communities side by side with the DO camps|? What was it that motivated them to settle down in Germany, the country of their persecutors and torturers? How did they relate to their DP brothers and what did they aspire to? "New Beginnings" present an unprecedented in-depth inquiry into the development of Jewish lives in postwar Germany. The story of the suevivors, told here from within and based on an extensive variety of primary sources, illuminates a key chapter in post Holocaust Jewish history

Abstract: In 1901, the Zionist Organization founded the Jewish National Fund to purchase lands in the Land of Israel and transfer them to the ownership of the Jewish people. The book before us examines and summarizes the JNF's land purchasing policies and endeavors, from the establishment of the Fund to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. A major part of this essay centers on the period from 1936 to 1948, which were the most important years of the JNF's activities and during which it became almost the sole Jewish entity promoting this aspect of the building of the land of Israel. During these years, the JNF purchased about 600,000 dunams, which constitute more than 60% of its acquisitions from its establishment to the establishment of the State. The pivotal nature of the JNF during those years stems first and foremost from the recognition of its settlement endeavors by the top institutions of the Zionist Organization, in promoting the political interests of the Zionist movement in the land of Israel. The creation of actual real property owned by the Jewish people which also served as a foundation for settlement was a prerequisite for achieving a Jewish state. Under it's articles of association, the lands purchased by the JNF cannot be sold. They were leased for the purpose of establishing agricultural and urban settlements and subsequently, the State of Israel applied this principle to all its lands (about 20.5 million dunams), of which JNF lands now constitute about 13%

Abstract: This book seeks to re-examine the question of whether, indeed, Rav Kook's halakhic teachings lack originality and innovation; whether the two worlds of Rav Kook - the philosophical and the halakhic - are truly contradictory; whether those who maintain this position are correct in neglecting Rav Kook's halakhic heritage. The discussion here focuses on the nature of the philosophical and ideological considerations that find expression in his halakhic teachings. The type of considerations to be examined is called "meta-halakhic" or "extra-halakhic"; this term is defined in relation to the accepted conceptual framework and boundaries of halakha. Abstract: In 1961 William L. Moran published The Hebrew Language in Its Northwest Semitic Background (The Bible and the Ancient Near East: Essays in Honor of William Foxwell Albright), in which he presented a state-of-the-art description of the linguistic milieu out of which Biblical Hebrew developed. Moran stressed the features found in earlier Northwest Semitic languages that are similar to Hebrew and he demonstrated how the study of those languages sheds light on Biblical Hebrew. Since Moran wrote, our knowledge of both the Hebrew of the biblical period and of Northwest Semitic has increased considerably. In the light of new epigraphic finds and the significant advances in the fields of Biblical Hebrew and Northwest Semitic in the past four decades, the Institute for Advanced Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem convened an international research group during the 2001-2002 academic year on the topic "Biblical Hebrew in Its Northwest Semitic Setting: Typological and Historical Perspectives." The volume presents the fruits of the year-long collaboration and contains twenty articles based on lectures given during the year by members of the group and invited guests: Moshe Bar-Asher, Joshua Blau, John A. Emerton, Steven E. Fassberg, W. Randall Garr, Edward L. Greenstein, John Huehnergard, Avi Hurvitz, Jan Joosten, Menaem Z. Kaddari, Geoffrey Khan, André Lemaire, Mordechai Mishor, Adina Moshavi, Alviero Niccacci, M. O'Connor, Frank H. Polak, Elisha Qimron, Gary Rendsburg, and Ada Yardeni. The wide array of subjects discussed has important implications for the study of Biblical Hebrew and Northwest Semitic

Abstract: This book focuses on the formative years of Nahum Sokolow's political thought during the years in which he dedicated his energies to working within the social fabric of the Jewish community of Polish lands. In his political thought, activities and agenda, Sokolow consistently searched for a "middle way" that would create a common space in which the many different sectors of Jewish society could come together. Sokolow also hoped that his political agenda would have an impact upon Polish society at a time when Jews and non-traditional Jewish movements were heavily influenced by the liberal atmosphere of Polish positivism. Until the end of the 1890s Sokolow hoped that the Jewish progressive circle would be his main political and ideological ally. However, as the twentieth century approached Sokolow realized that his attempt to persuade these intellectuals to join him in his new political agenda had failed. This forced him to turn to a new ideological formula, the Zionist movement. Even then, however, he continued to espouse his own moderate brand of Jewish politics for the remainder of his life in Russian Empire, Germany and England. Over the years, this commitment to his unique ideology made Sokolow one of the most prominent representatives of Polish Jewish

Abstract: The present study begins as an attempt to analyze an apparently paradoxical situation created by two events, which occurred simultaneously in 1948: the establishment of Israel as an independent state and the emergence of the 'Ofakim Hadashim' (New Horizons) group of artists, acknowledged as the most renowned local artists at the time. The creation of the State of Israel may be considered the high point of Jewish nationalism, when the nation celebrated its distinctiveness. On the other hand, Ofakim Hadashim was a group of intellectuals who aspired to disengage their artistic work from the dominant political processes of the time. The basic claim of its members was l'art pour l'art, which ostensibly contradicted the significance of the general political process. This situation is highly interesting since it challenges the general sociological assumptions about the role of intellectuals in nation-building processes, and also contradicts the usual explanation regarding the Israeli state-building process. It concludes that an explanation of the social complexity existing in 1948 can be found in an understanding of modernity as a multifaceted phenomenon embracing a diversity of inherently contradictory practices

Abstract: This book examines the impact of Catholic censorship on the publication and dissemination of Hebrew literature in the early modern period. Hebrew literature made the transition to print in Italian print houses, most of which were owned by Christians. These became lively meeting places for Christian scholars, rabbis, and the many converts from Judaism who were employed as editors and censors. Raz-Krakotzkin argues that the regulation of Hebrew print provided an avenue for the integration of Hebrew literature into the Christian corpus

Abstract: For over forty years Prof. Shmuel Safrai published studies on the history of Erez Israel during the Second Temple period and the Talmud period, the history of Jewish culture and society in Erez Israel and the Diaspora and the relationship between the two. A majority of the studies in this collection revolve around elementary problems in this crucial period: the worship of god in the temple and synagogue, the Jewish city and its institutions, pilgrimage during the Second Temple period and after its destruction, the Hassidic movement during the Second Temple period and the Tannaim period, and the deeds of Rabbi Yohanan ben Zakkai. These studies are essential to the understanding of the Erez-Israeli history of the period
