    Abstract: The German language holds an ambivalent and controversial place in the modern history of European Jews, representing different-often conflicting-historical currents. It was the language of the German classics, of German Jewish writers and scientists, of Central European Jewish culture, and of Herzl and the Zionist movement. But it was also the language of Hitler, Goebbels, and the German guards in Nazi concentration camps. The crucial role of German in the formation of Jewish national culture and politics in the late nineteenth century has been largely overshadowed by the catastrophic events that befell Jews under Nazi rule. German as a Jewish Problem tells the Jewish history of the German language, focusing on Jewish national movements in Central and Eastern Europe and Palestine/Israel. Marc Volovici considers key writers and activists whose work reflected the multilingual nature of the Jewish national sphere and the centrality of the German language within it, and argues that it is impossible to understand the histories of modern Hebrew and Yiddish without situating them in relation to German. This book offers a new understanding of the language problem in modern Jewish history, turning to German to illuminate the questions and dilemmas that largely defined the experience of European Jews in the age of nationalism

    Abstract: Diese Studie analysiert den Werdegang Max Brods während der ersten Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts im kulturellen und politischen Prager Kontext und vor dem Hintergrund der für diesen Kontext charakteristischen Identitätsprobleme. Nachdem ein erster Versuch, das Identitätsproblem durch eine „indifferentistische0 Lebensphilosophie zu lösen, fehlgeschlagen war, entwickelte Brod, ausgehend von Buber, eine persönliche Auffassung vom Judentum. Auf der Grundlage der so gefundenen Identität wird er eine aktive Rolle in der zionistischen Bewegung und in der Politik der ersten Tschechoslowakischen Republik für die Anerkennung der jüdischen Nationalität spielen und als kultureller Vermittler zugunsten der Mitglieder des Prager Kreises und der tschechischen Künstler wirken.
    Abstract: This study analyses the career of Max Brod during the first decades of the 20th century in the cultural and political context of Prague and against the background of the problems of identity which were typical for this context. After the failure of his first attempt to solve the problem of identity by espousing an 0indifferentist0 philosophy of life, Brod developed a personal conception of Judaism which took Buber as its starting point. Working from the discovery of this identity, he plays an active role in the Zionist movement and in the political life of the first Czechoslovak Republic working for the recognition of Jewish nationality and as a cultural mediator for the benefit of members of the Prague Circle and Czech artists.

    Abstract: Existe-t-il une relation entre la judéité d'un écrivain et sa pratique littéraire ? Pour répondre à cette question, ce livre s'inscrit dans une perspective sociologique et se fonde sur l'analyse d'un corpus de plus de trois cents ouvrages, publiés entre 1945 et le début des années quatre-vingts par une soixantaine d'écrivains juifs contemporains de langue française. La mémoire, l'exil, la famille, l'engagement politique, l'attachement à la France, le sentiment de solitude et un rapport à la langue complexe et parfois douloureux sont les thèmes le plus fréquemment abordés. Ces points communs ne suffisent cependant pas à accréditer la thèse de l'existence d'une littérature juive française. En revanche, l'étude minutieuse des œuvres de cinq écrivains permet de préciser la nature du lien entre sentiment identitaire et pratique littéraire. Judéité et écriture sont expérimentées par Georges Perec sur le mode de l'absence, du gommage ; pour Romain Gary, l'identité comme la littérature sont soigneusement tenues à distance. Albert Memmi aborde à la fois les questions juives et les questions littéraires d'un point de vue politique ; un même principe d'ambivalence joue dans la manière dont Albert Cohen se définit en tant que juif et écrivain. Un des enjeux des textes d'Edmond Jabès, enfin, consiste à réaliser la fusion entre judéité et écriture. Une relation d'affinité entre écriture et judéité est ainsi démontrée. En cherchant à concilier l'analyse des conditions sociales de production littéraire et l'étude des formes élémentaires de l'écriture, ce livre constitue un apport décisif à la sociologie de la littérature.
