Abstract:
Criticizes the way the Holocaust is presented in Polish textbooks for schoolchildren published in the last two years. States that the experts' report published by the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw was not taken into consideration and many of the same textbooks were approved last year by the Ministry of Education. Analyzes textbooks, stating that most of them fail to explain differences in the situation of the Poles and the Jews under Nazi occupation. Usually, the Holocaust is represented as part of the Nazi policy in Poland and the writers fail to show its universal aspects. In some textbooks the situation of Poles during World War II is described without mentioning the fate of the Jews. Another distortion is in the attitude of Poles toward Jews; according to the textbooks, sympathy and help predominated, which is not true. Concludes that despite many faults and inaccuracies, the newer textbooks are closer to the truth than the previous ones.
