Abstract:
A riot broke out in September 1831, in Coro, Venezuela, against Jewish storekeepers who had come from the Dutch colony of Curaçao a few years before to settle in Coro. Shots were heard, antisemitic pamphlets were distributed, and threats were pasted on lampposts and doors; one Jew was badly mauled. The cause was religious animosity and jealousy of the Jews' commercial acumen. The event lasted a few weeks and died down, but the hostility against the Jews remained.
