Kurzfassung:
In 1956 there was an intensification of anti-Jewish sentiment in Poland, kept in check until then by Polish authorities. Negative stereotypes of Jews were rife among the people, including members of the Communist Party. Jews were accused of cronyism, preoccupation with their own interests, a hostile attitude towards Poles, and in general acting to the detriment of "the working people". There were antisemitic outbursts in Lower Silesia, including in Wałbrzych on 11 September 1956. The ruling party, looking for the causes of these tensions, determined that the Jews themselves were to blame. This instrumental approach may have prevented further unrest, but the problem of the Jewish ethnic minority remained. Concludes that the party was wanting in critical self-appraisal.
