Abstract:
Polish Jews sent three delegations to Rome - in 1754, 1758, and 1761 - to complain about blood libel accusations and other persecutions of the Jews by Polish clergy. Surveys previous missions of the Jews to the Vatican and their effects. The immediate cause for sending the 1754 delegation was the trial and execution in Żytomierz of 13 Jews accused of killing a Christian child for ritual purposes. The delegations tried to obtain documents from the Vatican that would protect them from Polish allegations relating to the ritual use of Christian blood. One of the positive effects of the second delegation was an investigation conducted by Cardinal Ganganelli which confirmed that the accusations against the Jews were groundless. Concludes that the documents regarding this form of political activity on the part of Polish Jews indicate their extensive contacts with representatives of the Church on various levels.
