Kurzfassung:
Describes attempts to resettle in Australia some of the 18,000 Jewish refugees who had spent the war in Shanghai. 776 refugees entered Australia up to March 1947 under a "family reunion" scheme sponsored by the Minister of Immigration Arthur A. Calwell. However, public reaction was hostile, and the press and right-wing groups accused the Jews of bringing in large amounts of gold and money illegally, of being communist spies, and of competing with Australian ex-servicemen for transport (Calwell limited Jewish refugees on ships from Shanghai to a 25% quota). Reports by Australian Consul-General Fuhrman on the corruption rife in Shanghai and the suspicious nature of the refugees, regarded by the British as collaborators and criminals since they had not been interned by the Japanese, led to severe restrictions on the issue of landing-permits to Jews. Australia refused to accept Jews even when the communist armies approached Shanghai. The Jews eventually settled in Israel.
