Abstract:
The second article analyzes the changing attitude of Polish socialists to the "Jewish question" from 1890-93 as reflected in the newspaper "Przedswit". At first, Jewish workers' movements were accepted as equals in the struggle and antisemitism was condemned. From 1891, though, influenced by Polish nationalists, the paper described Jews as an element of "russification". Antisemitism was seen as a foreign import stemming from the antagonistic Russian regime and from the Jews themselves who were viewed as a disruptive influence in the socialist movement. The change in attitude was marked after the general workers' strike in Łódź and the accompanying pogrom against the Jews in May 1892. At the Paris Conference (1892) the Jews were denied rights as a collective and Jewish workers' circles were condemned (particularly by Pilsudski) as russifying agents.
