Abstract:
Describes the last attempt at Jewish agricultural colonization in Brazil by the ICA (Jewish Colonization Association), at a time of crisis for similar colonies in Argentina and southern Brazil, and of the dangers facing German Jewry. In 1933, ICA designed a plan to resettle German Jews with farming skills in Rezende, in accordance with the 1934 Brazilian immigration quotas allotting 80% of visas to farmers. The authoritarian government of Getúlio Vargas was opposed to Jewish immigration; many high officials nurtured anti-Jewish prejudices and did not accept that Jews could work the land. Beginning with the secret circular of 1937 asking Brazilian diplomats not to issue visas to Jews, all of ICA's solicitations were denied; the outbreak of World War II ended the flow of refugees.
