Abstract:
Discusses various historians' interpretations of the role of the Wannsee Conference, arguing that the decision on the Final Solution was not taken there or even as a result of the failure of the "Barbarossa" campaign. The intention to exterminate the Jews was repeatedly expressed by the Nazis before the war, but was to be carried out in stages. Extermination began before the Conference. Notes that the officials meeting in Wannsee discussed only the fate of Jews capable of labor and of the German Jewish elderly. These were to be spared, though only temporarily and as camouflage for the true meaning of the "evacuation"; the rest - the majority - were to be put to death immediately. The failure of "Barbarossa" merely changed the extermination site from the Soviet Union to Poland. Concludes that the SS called the Conference because of the need to inform other government agencies of the plan and to enlist their cooperation.
