Abstract:
Analyzes the biblical word "sho'ah" as related to "shav", interpreting it as empty, desolate, inimical to life, like the desert. "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God 'la-shav'" (usually translated as "in vain") thus means that God's name should not be invoked in connection with this desert, and thereby has no place in discussions of the Holocaust. And yet the word also has positive connotations, as exemplified in the Egyptian god Shu, god of the empty space between earth and sky, who brings forth storms but also transmits the rays of the sun; and this points to possibilities of Holocaust theology.
