    Abstract: This volume offers a thorough introduction to Jewish world literatures in Spanish and Portuguese, which not only addresses the coexistence of cultures, but also the functions of a literary and linguistic space of negotiation in this context. From the Middle Ages to present day, the compendium explores the main Jewish chapters within Spanish- and Portuguese-language world literature, whether from Europe, Latin America, or other parts of the world. No comprehensive survey of this area has been undertaken so far. Yet only a broad focus of this kind can show how diasporic Jewish literatures have been (and are ) – while closely tied to their own traditions – deeply intertwined with local and global literary developments; and how the aesthetic praxis they introduced played a decisive, formative role in the history of literature. With this epistemic claim, the volume aims at steering clear of isolationist approaches to Jewish literatures

    Abstract: Von dem bedeutenden französischen Autor Patrick Modiano (geboren 1945) wurde hier bereits einiges besprochen (vgl. z.B. zuletzt "Ein Stammbaum", BA 1/08), nicht aber sein 1. Roman, mit dem er berühmt wurde und der erst jetzt auf Deutsch vorliegt. Erschienen ist der Erstling im Original bereits 1968. Weitgehend aus der Ich-Perspektive wird in 4 Kapiteln die Lebensgeschichte eines jungen Mannes, Raphae͏̈l Schlemilovitch, erzählt, der in Frankreich vor, während und nach dem 2. Weltkrieg nach seiner jüdischen Identität sucht. Dabei taucht er in verschiedene fiktive Lebensentwürfe eines französischen Juden ein, in stereotype Rollen, als "Gigolo", als "kollaborierender Jude", als "Vorzeigejude des dritten Reichs" oder als Liebhaber von Eva Braun. Mit ihm begegnet der Leser fiktiven wie realen Personen, so z.B. Maurice Sachs oder Sigmund Freud. Mit einem aufschlussreichen Nachwort der Übersetzerin, der Germanistin und Romanistin Elisabeth Edl. Der Roman war im April auf Platz 1 der SWR-Bestenliste. Ein provokantes wie verstörendes Buch, stilistisch anspruchsvoll, für geübte Leser. Empfehlenswert. (Simone Roth)
    Abstract: Ein junger Mann, Raphael Schlemilovitch, in Paris zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. In seiner fingierten Autobiografie ziehen kaleidoskopartig die Lebensentwürfe der Juden im besetzten Frankreich vorüber: Mal ist er "Kollaborationsjude" und Liebhaber von Eva Braun, mal "Feld-und-Flur-Jude" in der tiefsten Provinz, bald emigriert er mit falschen Papieren und wird der Judenverfolgung dennoch nicht entgehen. Bis er bei Doktor Freud auf der Couch liegt, der dem halluzinierenden Held eine "jüdische Neurose" attestiert. Modianos brillantes Erstlingswerk ist einer der aufregendsten Romane über das von Deutschen besetzte Paris und ein stilistisches Meisterstück zugleich
