Kurzfassung:
In 1940, the extant Jewish Central Committee for Slovakia was transformed by the Slovak authorities into the Jewish Center (i.e. a Judenrat), with compulsory membership of all the Slovak Jews. In reaction to the collaborative Jewish leadership, and facing the threat of deportations, the underground Working Group was established in the spring of 1941. Led by Rabbi Michael Dov Weissmandel and Zionist activist Gisi Fleischmann, the Group tried to halt the deportations in 1942 and exert pressure on Church officials in an attempt to save European Jewry.
