Abstract: Traces the various stages of Holocaust remembrance internationally and in France, and connects them to social and political trends. Emphasizes the revolutions that representation of the Shoah has undergone: the victim has gradually become the hero, and minorities are increasingly holding on to their specific national identities. The first postwar period of amnesia was followed in the 1960s by a period of slow reconstruction of the past. During this phase, which lasted until 1975, the Shoah became "the event" of the 20th century. This phase coincided with the influx of North African Jews to France. Their attachment to traditional religious values gave rise to a new discourse on the right to difference. The period 1975-90 marked the institutionalization of Holocaust memory. From the 1990s on, the struggles accompanying the rediscovery of Holocaust memory have become models for struggles conducted by various nationalities and groups. Notes that the obligation to remember has, at the same time, become an object of criticism.
