Abstract:
Discusses the problem of special taxes imposed on the Jews of Warsaw. Some taxes were abolished in 1863 but the inn tax remained. Surveys the controversy regarding the additional concession tax for Jewish innkeepers which was imposed at that time. This study is based on documents from the Main Archives of Old Documents in Warsaw, mainly the letters of the Warsaw Jewish innkeeper Berek Winawer to the Council of State of the Kingdom of Poland, which reflect the Jews' struggle to abolish the burden and the authorities' struggle to maintain it because of its importance for the State Treasury.
