Abstract:
Analyzes medieval Spanish lamentations which express bitter complaints and protests of Spanish Jews against their persecution during the late 14th-early 15th centuries. Outlines the reasons for these literary outbursts: the pogroms instigated by the archbishop of Seville, Ferrant Martinez, in 1391, which spread throughout Spain. Many Jews were killed or forced to convert to Christianity. In 1412, again, thousands of Jews were forced to convert, and others fled to Portugal.
