Abstract:
Traces the history of the "family camp" in Birkenau which was founded in September 1943 for the Jews from Theresienstadt, on Himmler's orders. Deals with consecutive transports, conditions of existence there, the mortality rate, the resistance movement led by communist prisoners. Reflects on differences between the two camps, in light of Himmler's policy and the need of the Nazi authorities for a "model" camp where visits of foreigners were allowed (e.g. for representatives of the International Red Cross). The family camp in Birkenau was liquidated in March 1944. Only 6% of its prisoners survived the war.
