Abstract:
In the Polish Commonwealth in the mid-16th to the mid-17th centuries, ca. 20 host desecration accusations were made against the Jews and ca. 60 accusations of ritual murder. Discusses the impact and the consequences of these accusations on the Jewish communities throughout the country. Prayers, "selichot", and poems were composed in dedication to the victims of the accusations. The Jews created, as well, a security system which partially protected them against false accusations - e.g. privileges were obtained from secular and Church authorities for some of the Jewish communities in the towns in which ritual murder accusations had arisen in the past. Documents of the Vaad Arba Aratzot (the Jewish communal authority) show that large sums of money were spent for legal defense against the accusations and for aid to the Jewish victims.
