Abstract:
Strack (1848-1922) was professor of Old Testament and rabbinic literature at the Friedrich-Wilhelm University in Berllin, and mentor of the students who organized the Institutum Judaicum in preparation for becoming missionaries to the Jews. He used his intensive knowledge of post-biblical Jewish literature to refute falsehoods propagated by antisemites of his time, such as Stöcker or August Rohling, and contemporary cases of blood libel. He called for an attitude of justice and brotherly love for the Jews. On the other hand, he was a missionary through and through, convinced of the wrongheadedness and inferiority of Judaism with its emphasis on the law, and of the need to convert the Jews to Christianity. The "Kommentar zum Neuen Testament aus Talmud und Midrasch" (1922-1928), conceived by Strack and carried out by Paul Billerbeck, influenced generations of students in this spirit.
