Abstract:
Surveys internal and external political developments which consolidated the influence of fascist elements in the two countries. Focuses on the Arrow Cross party in Hungary and the Iron Guard in Romania. also discusses anti-Jewish legislation in the two countries in the interwar period, claiming that the legislation was not an outcome of the consolidation of fascist elements in the two countries towards the end of the 1930s. However, it contributed to an increase in the influence of fascism and of its anti-Jewish propaganda, and also focused attention on the "Jewish problem" instead of on economic and national issues. The Jewish communities in both countries focused their efforts on relief for the persecuted and aid toward their emigration. States that the official anti-Jewish policies of both countries in the late 1930s should be regarded as manifestations of the establishments' opportunistic desires to appease their people and to consolidate their own status in the eyes of the Nazis who were on the rise in Europe.
