Abstract:
Discusses attitudes regarding suicide in Jewish texts, bringing examples from Josephus's descriptions of the mass suicides in Yodfat and at Masada; suicide as dealt with in the Talmud; the mass suicides committed by German Jews during the Crusades (especially the First Crusade); and Rabbi Ephraim Oschri's account of queries regarding suicide by Jews in the Kovno ghetto during the Holocaust - but he relates that only three Jews actually did it. Concludes with the statement that doctrinal Judaism was always opposed to suicide, but there have been cases in which it was seen to be justified.
