Abstract:
Describes specific paintings by the great Polish artist Jan Matejko and his Jewish pupil Maurycy Gottlieb, especially two paintings hanging opposite each other in the gallery dedicated to Matejko at the National Museum in Warsaw. Discusses, also, the relations between the two artists, and between Poles and Jews in the 19th century.
