Abstract:
The Talmudic text of bGiṭṭ 56b-57a, which describes Jesus’ torment inhell, is very peculiar. Numerous publications have therefore dealt with it overthe centuries. Federico Dal Bo recently published a new interpretation of thistext, as well as of its oldest Latin translation. Not only have I followed DalBo’s arguments with interest, but they have also inspired me to reconsider myown understanding of the texts. In particular, with regard to the text of bGiṭṭ56b-57a it is very different from Dal Bo, but also from all other explanationsthat I know. For me, this is not an intentional polemic against Jesus or Chris-tianity, but a humorous approach to the problems of external and internalthreats to Judaism over the centuries. However, the Latin translation did notfollow this line of thinking. By shortening the text and making a very subtlechange, the translator made it not only a polemic against Jesus, but also atext that can easily be understood as blasphemy against the Christian faith.
