Abstract:
The early Christian writers Justin Martyr, Tertullian, and Aphraates composed similar arguments, claiming for Psalm 22 a christological interpretation. They held that the Jews misunderstood this Psalm as pertaining to King David, whereas in fact it pertained to Jesus and foreshadowed his suffering. This interpretation was a result of early Christian polemics and probably originated with Justin's anti-Jewish works, with Tertullian and Aphraates basing their works on Justin. Many Christian biblical interpretations were motivated by perceived threats of Jewish alternative meanings and were polemics against Jewish interpretations. Justin's exegesis became a model for later Christian polemicists.
