Abstract: Scholars generally agree that Moses and Elijah appear at the Transfiguration because they are connected to each other in some way, and that this connection informs the significance of the story as a whole. However, there is no consensus regarding how Moses and Elijah are related, and consequently there is significant disagreement about how their presence contributes to the Transfiguration. The present study, which focuses on Mark's account (Mark 9.2–8), argues that Moses and Elijah appear together because they received similar theophanies at Mount Sinai and, as a result, the Transfiguration should be read as a mountaintop theophany in which Jesus constitutes the personal presence of Israel's God.

Abstract: In the present article, I argue that a passage from the Damascus Document (CD 4:12–16 + 5:15–19) and an opaque saying attributed to Jesus (Luke 11:20) mutually illuminate each other. The starting point of both is the conception that a conflict between God and the evil power(s) took place before the Exodus. An analogy is drawn between this period and the present liminal period considered as the beginning of the eschatological period prior to the eschaton. The expectations for healing and resurrection in the eschaton in 4Q521 2 ii 8, 11–12 shed light on Matt 11:3 // Luke 7:19. When viewed through the lens of the conception that the eschatological period has already commenced, these expectations were transformed to Jesus’s activity in the present.

Abstract: The Markan Passion narrative alludes to Ps 22 (LXX Ps 21) in reverse, culminating with Jesus’ cry: ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ (Mark 15.34; cf. Ps 22.1). I argue that this ‘extended inverted allusion’ was an admired literary technique. Through select examples of this technique in the writings of the Hebrew Bible and Greco-Roman literature, I demonstrate its various functions—it can be employed to reverse meaning, to dissociate causation or to create new narrative trajectories. Reading Mark 15 in light of the literary functions of inverted allusion reveals new interpretive possibilities. In the Septuagint, Psalm 21 suggests that the psalmist's suffering was merited because of transgressions, but the inverted allusions to this Psalm in Mark 15 reinforce that Jesus’ suffering is unmerited (cf. Mark 15.10, 14) by decoupling the suffering from the transgressions. Additionally, in LXX Ps 21, the psalmist moves from forsakenness on account of transgressions toward divine deliverance. By alluding to this Psalm in reverse, Jesus travels the psalmist's journey in reverse. Rather than move from forsakenness toward divine deliverance, Mark's Jesus moves toward forsakenness, precisely to bring about divine deliverance.

Abstract: In Mark 10:1–12, Jesus and the Pharisees discuss whether divorce is permissible. The Pharisees’ question and Jesus’s answer seem artificial against the background of ancient discourses on divorce. Particularly Jesus’s answer in Mark 10:9, which forbids divorce without exception, still gives rise to discussion today. It appears uncompromising and unyielding compared to other NT texts dealing with divorce (Matt 19:1–12; 1 Cor 7:10–16). I show that the prohibition of divorce in Mark 10:9 is the result of a conflict of authority between Jesus and the Pharisees that develops in the Streitgespräche in Mark’s Gospel up to Mark 10:1–12.

Abstract: The goal of this article is to argue for the three following theses: (1) that Moses Mendelssohn’s Philosophische Gespräche (1755) offer a rehabilitation of Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677) in explicit opposition to the stigmatization that Spinoza suffered in the German lands from the beginning of the 1670s; (2) that the article “Rorarius” from Pierre Bayle’s (1647–1706) Dictionnaire historique et critique (1697–1698) is a crucial source for Mendelssohn’s strategy to rehabilitate Spinoza; (3) that Mendelssohn’s use of Bayle as a source constitutes an unexplored link between oppressed religious minorities. To show this, the article will consist of an introductory part to set the subject matter and three subsequent parts, one for each of the points that I am going to argue for.

Abstract: This paper is dedicated to a systematic analysis of the argumentative aspect of Abigail’s speech, which is the primary pivot of the speech. The argument is founded on two separate demands of David by Abigail: preventing the spilling of innocent blood, and avoiding self-redemption. These two demands relate to two different facets in David’s plan, exemplify different ideas, and attest to Abigail’s varied motivations. The discussion explores the legitimacy of David’s self-redemption, and its conclusions reveal a new facet in Abigail’s speech, which clarifies her dual function in the narrative.

Abstract: The article deals with medieval Jewish exegesis on Ps. 30. Jewish commentators found it hard to interpret the superscription of the psalm, since the superscription mentions the dedication of a house (presumably, the Temple) and it also mentions David, while the Bible explicitly says that the Temple wasn’t built in David’s time. On top of that, the commentators struggled to find a connection between the superscription and the psalm itself. The commentators tried to solve this problem in several ways, but one can discern that the commentators writing in Judeo-Arabic were beginning to realize that the psalm can be interpreted on its own, without the superscription. Yefet b. ‘Eli and Moses b. Jiqitila underscored the significance of the illness and cure motif in the psalm. Based on this approach, R. Abraham Ibn Ezra claimed that the psalm should first be interpreted on its own, as a psalm discussing a cure from illness, regardless of the superscription, and only later be linked to the superscription. Ibn Ezra’s Commentary has influenced several commentators in Christian Europe. However, none of them seems to have embraced his approach as to the centrality of cure from illness motif in the interpretation of the psalm.

Abstract: In his Terrae Sanctae Elucidatio (1639), Francesco Quaresmio devotes a digression to three highly peculiar objects: two plant roots grown into the shape of a crucifix (one of them discovered in the vicinity of Jerusalem), and a figure of the crucified Christ sprouted from a nut collected by a pilgrim near the Holy Sepulchre. This article explores the methods employed by Quaresmio in the study of these objects, which belonged to a larger group of images apparently produced by nature discussed in the works of late medieval and early modern travellers, religious writers, natural historians and antiquarians. It examines the use that Quaresmio made of autopsy, visual reproduction, and witness interviews in researching the history of the three crucifixes. At the same time, it shows how his adoption of empirical methods went hand in hand with devotional preoccupations, bringing to the forefront Quaresmio’s conception of the relationship between nature and the divine, as well as his belief in the complementarity of natural evidence, historical knowledge, and biblical exegesis.

Abstract: In this article, I survey exegetical approaches to the “blind and lame,” using disability studies and close readings to expose ableist bias. I also present my reading, in which I propose that the blind and lame are disabled persons whom David hates not just because of who they are, but also because of the fears they provoke. He is afraid. Disabled bodies can be unpredictable, untamable, and uncertain. David has no idea what his enemies are capable of, because “blind” and “lame” are vague and amorphous labels. Parading blind people and lame people on the ramparts does not display the weakest people in a strong city but displays people of unknown strengths.

Abstract: few years after Moses Mendelssohn’s death (1786) David Friedländer wrote life-history descriptions in which he took a fragmentary look at Mendelssohn’s personality and emphasized that he had succeeded in approaching moral perfection as a human being and as a merchant to a high degree. With the virtuous perfection pattern Moses Mendelssohn (Vollkommenheitsmuster Moses Mendelssohn) designed by him, Friedländer initially pursued two intentions: on the one hand, he established a modern Jewish educational ideal, and on the other hand, his image of Mendelssohn served him to combat prejudice among non-Jews. Three decades later, Friedländer published further biographical fragments about Mendelssohn, this time appearing in a distinctly educational context, and again presenting Mendelssohn as an educational ideal. The article analyzes Friedländer’s ›Platonic‹ mode of presenting Mendelssohn and questions the significance of his parallelization of Mendelssohn with Socrates. In addition, it examines Friedländer’s choice of the fragment as a descriptive category and form of biographical representation, with which he functionalizes Mendelssohn for his pedagogical aims.

Abstract: The suitability of the image of »the parting of the ways« has been challenged in recent years for understandable reasons. And yet the question about how the historical Jesus relates to the development ofadistinguishable social movement in his name remains a crucial one in the study of Christian origins. This essay provides an overview of those aspects of Jesus's career that are most relevant for this topic by charting some of the argumentative subcurrents in Jesus research. Attention then turns to the defense of three historical arguments: that Jesus was a controversial and divisive figure already in his own time, that his eschatological message about the kingdom was of such a nature that it left the spectrum of acceptable responses to it relatively narrow, and he was critical of the practices and beliefs of others in ways that made possible further group differentiation. Thus, we should stand by the conclusion of Joseph Klausner – ex nihilo nihil fit – if perhaps for reasons that differ from his.

Yefet treated the psalms attributed to David as a detailed account of events that actually occurred in David's life, even though no such events are mentioned in the books of Samuel, Kings or Chronicles. It is my suggestion that Yefet did so in order to counterbalance Christian Syriac notions, according to which the headings of the psalms (»for David«) are unreliable late additions and the psalms attributed to David have no real connection with David. This Christian concept could have been considered as a support for the Muslim contention that the Hebrew text of the Bible (as the Jews read it) is distorted.

Abstract: The books of Jeremiah and Ezekiel both use the phrase עשׂה מִשְׁפָט וּצְדָקָה (“doing justice and righteousness”) to discuss the responsibilities of the Davidic king and the future of Judah in light of the disruptive events of the early sixth century BCE. The tradition of linking the terms מִשְׁפָט and צְדָקָה with kingship is widespread in the Hebrew Bible and has strong ancient Near Eastern parallels. Yet the books of Jeremiah and Ezekiel employ the two words as part of an idiomatic phrase, reflecting their divergent interpretations of the role and identity of the future Davidic king and, relatedly, what עשׂה מִשְׁפָט וּצְדָקָה entails. While the two books’ disagreements can be explained to some extent by their different settings (Judah and Egypt versus Babylonia), their distinct preferences for one Davidic line over another are suggestive of opposing political allegiances that may have contributed to neither book acknowledging the other’s existence.

Abstract: Petrus Comestor’s Historia Scholastica is a broad biblical rewriting composed ca. 1160 in the milieu of the cathedral school of Paris and the abbey of St. Victor. Also known as the ‘popular Bible’, it was considered a pivotal biblical manual until the mid-16th century, as the over 800 extant manuscripts show. For his wide-raging work, Comestor uses a variegated pool of sources, among which one of the most important is Flavius Josephus, known to Comestor through its Latin translation. The use of Josephus in the Historia is unique in its extent and has received some scholarly attention, but further research ought to be made. This article highlights how Comestor not only uses the Jewish Antiquities to fill in the gaps in the biblical narrative, for example integrating the account of the Binding of Isaac with indirect speech between father and son extrapolated from the Antiquities, but also compares them with the Vulgate and the Septuagint, granting them the same authority to establish the historical truth of biblical history. Passages from the Historia Genesis and Exodi are analyzed to show how Comestor goes out of his way to reconcile Josephus’ account and the Vulgate, showing the remarkable authority which the Jewish historian has in his eyes.

Abstract: When Jesus dies in Mark's account, the sky darkens, a loud voice declares that it has been forsaken by its god, and the temple curtain tears in two. These phenomena closely resemble the omens thought to have taken place before Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 CE as recorded by Josephus, Tacitus, 2 and 4 Baruch, the Pesiqta Rabbati, and the Talmudim. By surveying the ancient belief that tutelary deities would abandon cities before they were destroyed, I propose that the portents described by Mark and elaborated in subsequent gospels are another version of the popular tradition reporting the Judean god's departure from the temple before 70 CE.

Abstract: The narratological instrument of internal focalization offers a hitherto unexplored perspective on the narratives in 1 Samuel, in general, and on the Jonathan narratives, in particular. Internal focalization means that, in the narrative, the viewpoint of a character in the story is chosen, though not necessarily that of the main character. It appears that in contrast to most of the Old Testament (OT) prose, the book of 1 Samuel is abundant in the varying use of internal focalization. Applied to the David-Jonathan narratives, it is Jonathan who is the internal focalizer. This means we read about Jonathan’s thoughts, emotions, and perceptions instead of David’s. David, however, acts as focalized object, which means the focus of attention of the internal focalizer (Jonathan) is on David. This new perspective on the David-Jonathan narratives leads to fresh insights into the issue of the seemingly one-sided love of Jonathan for David. This may very well be explained by the fact that Jonathan is the internal focalizer. Hence, we read about his feelings for David. It does not necessarily mean that David has no similar feelings for Jonathan, but the narrator simply does not highlight these.

Abstract: This study explores the extent to which Mendelssohn’s Jerusalem engages with Protestant sources in its portrayal of rabbinic tradition, which will allow further light to be shed on the pivotal role of rabbinic Judaism and its representations within the emotionally charged polemics surrounding Jewish emancipation in eighteenth-century Prussia. This examination demonstrates that Mendelssohn’s idealized perception of rabbinic thought is deeply embedded in anti-rabbinic Protestant works, whose framework aids him in shaping his own unique outlook. By analyzing Mendelssohn’s deployment of the notion of contradiction, this article shows how his argumentative strategies in Jerusalem efficaciously counter well-known Protestant patterns of critique against rabbinic Judaism. By focusing on his idiosyncratic quotations and insinuations, it recovers the Christian works that he draws on and appropriates for his apologetic objectives and establishes that he uses Johann A. Eisenmenger for his depiction of the nature of rabbinic discursive practices while speaking out against “many a pedant” for their assertion that the rabbis disregarded the principle of noncontradiction. This article argues that Mendelssohn is alluding to eighteenth-century Protestant theologians who unreservedly follow Eisenmenger’s anti-rabbinic perspective and elaborates on how Mendelssohn entirely reframes this view as a conceptual strength of Judaism’s dialogical essence, thus rendering it compatible with the Enlightenment-based Weltanschauung.

Abstract: This study makes the case that within the books of Samuel-Kings as a whole, the book of Samuel presents two nested iterations of paradigmatic history, each of which anticipates the subsequent monarchic history with a distinct thematic focus. The more detailed of these two iterations—the story of Saul’s and David’s reigns in 1 Sam 9– 2 Sam 24—typologically anticipates the subsequent history of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah as narrated in 1 Kgs 12–2 Kgs 25. This paradigmatic “preview” of the fates of Israel and Judah is further condensed in the stories about Eli and Samuel in 1 Sam 1–8, which anticipate elements from 1 Sam 9–2 Sam 24, the book of Kings, and beyond.

Abstract: Jesus focussed entirely on Israel. Encounters between Jesus and non-Jewish people are only sporadically mentioned in New Testament sources and traditions. The question of how to deal with Gentiles was not reflected or answered in any systematic way by Jesus as a historical figure. It was the task of Early Christianity to discover potentials and impulses in the life and work of Jesus for the encounter with the pagan world. The question now arises with great urgency since the formerly inner-Jewish community – precisely through the work of Paul – has developed into a community within the world of nations. Every Gospel of the New Testament justifies this step differently, with the intention of remaining faithful to the message of Jesus while being sensitive to current challenges.

Abstract: According to the standard interpretation of Mark 7:19b—“Thus Jesus declared all foods clean”—Jesus nullifies the dietary commandments of the Torah. A close examination, which draws together some important recent research on this text, reveals that this is a misreading. Instead, Mark maintains a consistent portrait of Jesus as one who is faithful to Torah, even to the dietary laws. This will be shown through a close study of the syntax, literary context, sociocultural situation, Matthean parallel, and early church reaction. This article offers a close look at the standard interpretation, followed by an evaluation of two alternate readings.

Abstract: Armed conflict situations are more than just sites of violence, destruction, scars, torture, rape, and death; they are also sites of disability production through direct causes and indirectly through disruption of societal services, which would otherwise prevent disabilities. In this paper, the David Narrative in 2 Samuel is reread as an armed conflict text centered on power, disempowerment, and control issues. In this rereading, the imagery of disability is viewed as a symbol of terror to instill fear and deter rebels and traitors.

Abstract: Markan interpreters have long observed that the words of the voice from heaven at Jesus's baptism in Mark 1:11, "You are my beloved son, in you I am well pleased," recall one or more passages from the LXX, most often Ps 2:7 and Isa 42:1. Yet few interpreters note that Mark 1:11 also bears remarkable similarity to another verse—Jer 38:20 LXX (31:20 MT)—in which God calls Israel his "beloved son." On closer inspection, there are reasons to believe that Mark alludes to this verse as well as to Ps 2:7 and Isa 42:1. In addition to the fact that Israel is the only entity known as God's "beloved son" in ancient Jewish literature outside the New Testament, Mark's prologue and Jer 38 are united by a common remembrance of Israel's exodus and the expectation of a new one. If this reading is correct, then Mark simultaneously identifies Jesus as God's royal son and the embodiment of God's original son, Israel, in one breath.

Abstract: This article asks why Jesus in Mk 2.10 interprets the authority (εξουσία γρ) of the Son of Man in Dan. 7.14 as the authority to forgive sins. I approach this question by looking at IIQMelchizedek (11Q13). Drawing on a constellation of texts pertaining to jubilee (Lev. 25, Isa. 61.1, Dan. 9.24-27), 11QMelchizedek portrays Melchizedek as forgiving Israel's sins by his jubilean declaration of 'liberty In light of similar intertextual moves being made in Mark, I suggest that Mk 2.10-'the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on the land (ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς) —invokes the language of the jubilee legislation in Lev. 25.10: 'you will declare forgiveness on the land (διαβοήσετε ἄφεσιν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς). I conclude that this interpretation of 'authority' in Dan. 7.14 stems from an assumed conflation between the Son of Man of Dan. 7.13-14 with the herald messiah of Isa. 61.1, as well as an interpretation of Isa. 61.1 in which the messiah enacts the eschatological forgiveness of Israel's sins by his jubilean declaration of liberty.
