Abstract:
Many of the early Zionists, including Theodor Herzl, were motivated by the rise of antisemitism in Europe and the realization that the continued existence of the Jewish people could not be guaranteed through assimilation. Until the mid-19th century, European Jews were more isolated and had little contact with non-Jews. However, with modernization, assimilationist Jews became more involved in politics and society, and were exposed to antisemities' criticism. Early Zionists attempted to refute such criticism, which claimed that Jews were cowards and parasites, and to restore national dignity by encouraging the Jews to build a homeland in Israel. Discusses literary works by early Zionists (e.g. Herzl, Nordau, Mendele Mokher Sforim, Brenner, Hazaz), noting the fact that they adopted some anti-Jewish stereotypes in order to further the Zionist cause.
