Abstract:
Contends that the Wannsee Conference was convened in order to take a decision on the extermination of the Western European and German Jews (the mass murder of the Jews in Eastern Europe was already under way at that time). Its secondary goal was to work out a definition of who was to be treated as a Jew - i.e. to decide on the treatment of "partial Jews", Jews in mixed marriages, etc. The preparations for the conference were influenced by Hitler's decision to annihilate all the Jews of Europe. This decision was prompted by the USA's entry into the war; Hitler probably announced it to the party leadership on 12 December 1941. During the meeting no objections were raised by the ministerial bureaucracy to the liquidation of Jews from Germany and from the West, and the systematic planning for the destruction of the Jews throughout Europe began. The conference sealed the fate of German Jews who had already been deported to the East; they were to be killed.
