Abstract:
Gives an account of the Commission, led by Judge Harry Fisher in 1920, set up to investigate conditions in the Ukraine. Jews were attacked by counter-revolutionary White Russian forces and by Ukrainian nationalists who regarded them as Bolsheviks. Thousands were killed or injured in the pogroms. Jews also suffered from Bolshevik measures of confiscation and conscription carried out against the bourgeoisie. The Commission succeeded in entering the Ukraine together with the Polish army, and distributed large sums of money. However, one of its members, Professor Israel Friedlander, was murdered by bandits, as was another American Jewish relief worker.
