Abstract:
Contends that although study of the Spanish Inquisition and the expulsion of the Jews has progressed since the 1930s, contemporary European reactions to these events have been overlooked. A case in point is the Spanish Jesuit writer Baltasar Gracián (1601-1658). His attitude towards Jews reflects a continuity of traditional Christian attitudes, and his work influenced later European writings. In "El Criticón", the Jews are represented as an indeterminate element in the water where poison, disease, and purity intermingle, while the expulsion is represented as an act of purification from poison. This image of the Jew can also be seen in the late medieval work "Legatio Babylonica" by Peter Martyr (Pietro Martire Vermigli), and the association of Jews with disease has deep Christian roots.
