Abstract:
Discusses the warm personal relationship between Herzl and Bertha von Suttner, and its effect on her and her husband's sympathy for the Jews' plight and their campaign against antisemitism. Arthur von Suttner helped establish the Austrian branch of the Verein zur Abwehr des Antisemitismus in the early 1890s. Most Abwehrverein members supported assimilation of the Jews, had no desire to uphold Jews and Judaism, and viewed antisemitism as a threat to liberal values, and therefore worth fighting against. Herzl criticized the organization and recommended its dissolution. The Abwehrverein underestimated the strength of political antisemitism and was opposed to Jewish nationalism. The von Suttners were exceptions in their support for Herzl's assessment of the situation of the Jews.
