Abstract:
Describes the political context of the founding of the Towarzystwo Społeczno-Kulturalne Żydów (Socio-Cultural Association of the Jews) in Poland in 1950. Presents reasons why many Jews were not pleased with the Association, whose leaders expounded anti-Zionist propaganda in favor of internationalism. After the death of Stalin, when the general political atmosphere improved, many Jews decided to emigrate due to disappointment with life under a communist regime and because of antisemitism in the years 1956-57. The Communist Party leaders condemned antisemitism, but this was seen as a move which served the internal struggles inside the party. In 1957, Hersz Smolar, the chairman of TSKŻ, wrote a memorandum to the Central Committee of the Communist Party entitled "Kwestia żydowska w chwili obecnej" ["The Jewish Question Now"] (appended on pp. 515-519). Suggests that this document led to the sharp condemnation of antisemitism by Premier Józef Cyrankiewicz and to the issuing of a circular by the Central Committee in April 1957 against antisemitism.
