Abstract:
This article offers a new perspective regarding the politics of Black-Jewish relations in American music through the case study of George Gershwin. Previous research asserted the contribution of Black-Jewish relations to American culture as a product of the intrinsic connection obtains between Judaism and liberalism. Other theories related to this subject as a continuing cultural-political process that enabled Jews to become ‘White Americans’ on behalf of the Afro-American minority. George Gershwin’s work and life enable us to re-evaluate the previous research and suggest an alternative way to understand Black-Jewish relations in American music.
