Abstract:
The defendants in the 1952 Slánský trial held positions in the Czech government, and 11 of the 14 defendants were Jewish; the Jews were sentenced to death, while the others were sentenced to life imprisonment. The show trial, which took place in Prague, was similar to others of the Stalin era. However, there was an antisemitic aspect, which included the use of anti-Jewish stereotypes (e.g. the existence of a Jewish world conspiracy) and the use of antisemitic epithets by the investigators. The Jewish defendants were also accused of being Zionists, although Slánský had actually opposed Czech aid to Israel.
