Abstract:
On debates in late antiquity regarding what was more important - the letter of the law or the spirit of the law. Refers to biblical passages on the subject, Paul's view in his "Epistle to the Romans" (advocating the spirit), the views of Greek and Roman rhetoricians and of Roman judges in courts of law, and views expressed in Jewish post-biblical literature and in the Talmud.
