Abstract:
Discusses the American Galton Society (1918-35), established by eugenicist Madison Grant as a Protestant alternative to the American Anthropological Association, which was believed to be dominated by Jews like Franz Boas. The Galtonians espoused "scientific racism" and eugenics to promote Nordics in the USA. These academics moved into the public arena to successfully oppose immigration of non-Nordics and miscegenation. Eventually, the professional anthropologists, led by Boas, won out with their emphasis on culture rather than biology.
