Gruenbaum, the son of Zionist leader Isaak Gruenbaum, was a member of the Communist Party; he remained in Poland during World War II and was deported to Auschwitz, where he served as a Kapo. After the war, he was recognized in Paris by Jewish survivors, arrested and interrogated, but not indicted for collaboration. He immigrated to Palestine, and was killed fighting in the War of Independence. Discusses his life, his image amongst Holocaust survivors, and reactions in Israel to his story as part of the evolution of Holocaust memory in Israel.
