Abstract:
Contends that Vichy antisemitism had roots in the Catholic past of France. The Catholic Right developed what it viewed as a moral theology of antisemitic measures designed to exclude the Jews from French life. The Statut des Juifs of October 1940 adopted a racial definition of the Jews; it was enacted as a French initiative and approved by the Vatican. Only the deportations of French Jews aroused some protests from Church leaders. The postwar rethinking of the Church and events in the Holocaust has not yet brought about a fundamental change in Jewish-Catholic relations in France.
