Abstract:
Although Anne Frank's story is one of trepidation, anxiety, and alarm, it has been portrayed popularly as a story of optimism and faith in mankind. States that a sorting out is long overdue. Discusses how Anne's persona and her diary have been converted into a redemptive myth around the world and, in particular, in the Netherlands. This myth involves several untruths: that most Dutch people were rescuers, that most Dutch Jews were saved, and that the Dutch really cared about the small number of Jews who survived. The Dutch public welcomed Anne's miraculously preserved diary, but had she herself returned, few in the Netherlands would have wanted to learn about her suffering.
