Abstract:
Discusses the medieval phenomenon of compulsory sermons - i.e. sermons by Christian preachers that the Jews were forced to listen to, and relates the case of Pablo Christiani following the Barcelona Disputation in 1263. Stresses the innovation of the use of Jewish sources, particularly the Talmud, in the arguments of Pablo Christiani. One month after the disputation, King Jaume (King James I of Aragon, and Count of Barcelona) ordered that Jews would henceforth have to listen to the sermons of Christiani and his fellow Dominicans, but the next day he softened it with another order stating that the Jews were not to be forced to listen to these sermons. He probably changed the order due to pressure from Jewish communal leaders.
