Abstract:
The nationalist Polish Socialist Party (PPS) and the internationalist Social Democratic Party (SDKP) were founded in 1893 and, like right-wing antisemitic circles (which later gave rise to the Endecja), hoped to attract the proletariat to their cause. Examines the attitudes of these political groups to the "Jewish question" from 1889, particularly as reflected in the press. In that year the socialist journal "Pobudka", published in Paris, criticized the progressive Warsaw newspaper "Głos" for encouraging antisemitism and thus adopting the policy of the Russian oppressor. The editor, Stanisław Baranski, accepted the Jews as a national unit and recognized their right to participate as a group in deciding Poland’s political future.
