Abstract:
Despite the fact that in the Oslo I and II Accords (1993 and 1995) the Palestinian Authority (PA) agreed to remove hate texts from Palestinian textbooks, defamation of Jews, Israel, and Zionism is prevalent in contemporary (1995-98) textbooks for which the PA is responsible. There is widespread denigration of Judaism, dehumanization of Jews, delegitimization of Israel, and denial of any connection of Jews with the Land of Israel. Jews/Israelis are blamed for all Arab miseries and for universal evils. These attitudes, plus calls in textbooks for "jihad" and martyrdom, undermine hope for a peaceful settlement between Israelis and Palestinians. Part of the antisemitic rhetoric reflects an Islamic fundamentalist approach to Jews and the Land/State of Israel.
