Abstract:
Quotes from texts of the Revolutionary period on the question of how the Jew can be re-created and re-formed as a proper citizen in the new French sociey. The Jew is seen as a "noble savage". He exists outside society, but must be brought back into it minus his Jewishness. Everything must be done to deny that the Jews are a nation, and instead provide them with everything as individuals. They will be bound by a national standard for everything, including religion. Reveals that the true logic behind all these designs was to "free" the Jew from himself through assimilation and geographical displacement. Quotes several sources as despairing of any successful assimilation as long as the Jews continue to hope for their Messiah and yearn for Zion as their homeland.
