Abstract:
Discusses Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners" (1996) and his highly successful German lecture tour after the book's translation into German. Within the context of the conflict between the "destructive" and "evasive" theories (which view the Holocaust as either the logical outcome of, or accidental to, German history), Goldhagen's work is located within the "destructive" camp. Although Goldhagen gives credit to contemporary Germany for having abandoned its Nazi past, in the continuing conflict between the two camps of German historiography he is clearly viewed as opposing those who try to help Germany evade responsibility for the Holocaust. Nevertheless, some aspects of Goldhagen's scholarly approach are criticized.
