Abstract:
A brief history of the destruction of the Jewish community in Warsaw under the German occupation and of the Jewish resistance to it, both passive and active. During the early period of the occupation, from 1939 to mid-1942, Jews could not imagine that the Nazis would destroy all of them physically; thus, their politics of survival included the smuggling of food, clandestine cultural activities, etc. Rumors concerning looming deportations caused the youth to attempt to create a military underground. The period of the deportations (July 1942-early 1943) led to the crystallization of the underground in the ghetto and the subsequent uprising. In the course of the uprising, in April-May 1943, the ghetto was erased by the Nazis, and all its Jews were either killed or deported.
