Abstract:
Analyzes a Hebrew manuscript from 1771 containing a prayer which describes an attack against Jews in an unidentified Jewish community on the eve of the Pesach holiday. The brief text was first published by Moïse Schwab in the "Revue des Études Juives" 48 (1904); the ms. is held in the library of the Alliance Israélite Universelle in Paris. Contends that the events described, in which the Jews were accused by local Christians of lack of respect for the Christian religion, took place in Carpentras. The Jews of Avignon interceded and called in soldiers to protect the Jews in the ghetto of Carpentras. After a few days, calm was restored. The Jews decided to commemorate this event by declaring a "Purim" (day of rescue). Includes the Hebrew text and a French translation.
